What to Do if Your Home Is Burglarized

By June 14, 2016 June 26th, 2019 No Comments

Being woken up in the middle of the night to an unfamiliar noise is most certainly an unnerving experience, yet your senses suddenly kick into high gear and adrenaline rushes through your veins as you prepare to find the person who is invading your home, your family and your privacy.

Before making any rash decisions, take a moment to remember the game plan. Here are some tips if, God forbid, your home is broken into:

First, do not attempt confrontation. If the burglar runs, don’t chase them, instead press the panic button on your home alarm system and notify the authorities immediately. While having time away from your cell phone is important, try to keep it by your bed in case of emergencies. That way you are able to provide real-time updates to 911 as the police prepare to enter your home.

While you are on the phone with the authorities, move yourself and your family to a prearranged safe place in your home. Be sure to either barricade it or get out of the house to a neighbor’s home if possible and let the police know where you are so that they can tel the responding officers.

The most important thing is to NOT CONFRONT THE BURGLAR. If you are confronted, avoid “fighting it out”. Try to remain calm and make some mental notes about the age, appearance, or any distinguishing features about the perp. If it is clear that the confrontation is unavoidable and you are unable to remove yourself safely, defend yourself until law enforcement officials arrive.

SHIELD Security System’s goal is to put up a line of defense so strong that you will never need to  know what to do during a home break in. For more information regarding home security and safety, we invite you to contact our team.
